How much do other people's words affect your self-esteem?

Often our self-confidence can be linked to the tiny things other people say.

I know that mine was.

Let me share a little bit of my story.

When I lived, and worked, in Italy, I was
told, on two or three occasions, that when
I spoke Italian I sounded German.

At the time, I was so embarrassed.

Not that there's anything wrong with sounding German, but I wanted to sound Italian.

However, I couldn't roll my 'r's and
I spent hours berating myself for this and
cringing every time I said a word that
contained the 'r'!

Anyway, now I can roll my 'r's (most of the time) and I don't worry whether other people think I sound German, British or Italian!
